Online dating is its own strange animal. Ask anyone who’s joined a dating site or downloaded an app – it’s not as straightforward as uploading a few photos and meeting some hot guys. In fact, it typically goes bad wrong – at least once.
Online dating sites will never admit there might be flaws in the scientific match-making services they offer daters. They stand by the science. But online dating still deals with human actions, reactions, and emotions which are unpredictable. It’s bound to go wrong sometimes because science can’t control human emotion. Which is why online dating can be such a struggle.
But it’s also hilarious, at least when you hear other people’s online dating stories.
Which is why I was so excited to hear about Rom.com, a new comedy web series about online dating from Cracked Studios (check out all their stuff, actually). Rom.com follows the employees of the dating website Findlove.net (similar to Match.com), who are clueless when it comes to love and dating, trying to make scientific sense of the weird profiles and messages their users complain about.
“Is there a site for just decent, clean people? I’ll pay more…” one female dater says.
“I like…my friends, my tits, and uh…partying…dollar sign!” says another in her profile.
Oh, and then there are the requisite dick pics. Like, a lot of them.
The FIndlove.net employees are basking in the glow of their service’s success – meaning all the subscribers they have acquired and have yet to match properly – but then get a reality check when a hot new dating app called Kindlin comes along…
I got to hang with the lovely cast and writer of the show Dan O’Brien at the season 2 launch party last night, who admits the inspiration of the show came from this simple fact: men and women communicate differently. So he came up with the online dating angle – Science vs. Emotion. (Although he won’t admit which side he takes.)
Check out the premiere of season 2 TODAY February 4th – happy Valentine’s Day!

those, who have experienced online dating, will agree that it is a struggle indeed. risky, adventurous, desperate struggle sometimes. on the other hand, nothing ventured, nothing gained. the best way to face a serious thing is to treat it humorously.
