I read a story in Salon about a new dating site for those feelin’ the Bern – BernieSingles.com. Yes, for all the political junkies on the left – a Bernie fan hook-up site does in fact exist. You might have a hard time joining though – the site has crashed several times since its launch this past week. Its makers didn’t expect 1,000 new members per hour.
“We are just a couple of Bernie supporters who thought it would be pretty dank for us to have a place to meet and connect with other supporters,” the founders wrote on their site.
Now I’m wondering when the TrumpDaters.com site will launch…
Politics and dating haven’t always mixed. But in an election year where the candidates are trying to grab headlines – and millennials are actively supporting their candidates – the topic is bound to come up. So why avoid it?
I’ve got a few good nuggets of data for you, from the latest Match study (over 5,000 people surveyed in the U.S.) that delved into politics:
- Trump supporters were 99% more likely than Clinton fans to have a sex tape of themselves, and 1,104% more likely to expect “sexual contact” on a first date. Trump fans don’t seem to have much impulse control, as it were.
- Hilary supporters were 129% more likely to drink red wine, and 606% more likely to be gay.
- Singles who are passionate about politics have 13% more orgasms, and are 32% more likely to have multiple orgasms than the uninvested – whether you are a Republican or Democrat.
So, get excited about the election, people!
I’m not sure what this means for dating – if we will slowly polarize in our personal lives as we do in our political beliefs – refusing to date anyone who disagrees with us. At the end of the day, shouldn’t we be more involved? Shouldn’t we have debates? Shouldn’t we discuss issues that are important, even on dates and even if we disagree? Can’t we open our minds to others’ informed opinions?
Ok, maybe not while you’re on the first date, unless you both show up in your Bernie t-shirts.
But please register to vote. After all, there’s this fact: 25% of those surveyed in Match’s study say they wouldn’t date someone who isn’t registered to vote, and 35% say they wouldn’t date someone who “does not have an opinion on key political issues.”
XO,
Kelly
