A friend of mine was recently on a date with a man she’d met through an online dating service. In the middle of dinner, he handed her his resume, asking if she could help him find a job. I should also point out that he was downing vodka cranberries in rapid succession. (Really guys? Would you drink vodka cranberries on a date?) But I digress.
I understand we’re in a recession, and many people have been unemployed for a while and are desperate. But I have to ask, shouldn’t you draw the line at hitting up potential dates for jobs, especially ones you meet online? Shouldn’t both parties have the same intentions when they meet?
It’s confusing enough to date people who want to date. So I’m asking you networking types…please don’t muddy the water and use online dating sites to advance your career. Even in L.A. this is not ok, at least by those of us who actually are looking for a relationship. A romantic one, that is.

Haha, this is classic. What was your friend’s reaction? We need to know more…

Well, she wasn’t too happy…she got stuck with the bill too. Oh, and of course he didn’t have cash for the valet so had to borrow her last $7. He should have just asked her to go for a bike ride or something free, then casually ask if her company was hiring. Ha! Anyway, I got angry about this (not only because the guy was a douche), but because there is something narcissistic about L.A. people. If I am talking with a guy, even on a date, he’ll look around to see who else is in the room, perhaps someone who is more interesting or can help his career. Women aren’t much better. I’m wondering if this goes on in other places, or if this is an L.A. thing…looking for any avenue to advance your career…
Handing over the resume during dinner was something new for me though. Gotta love the clueless.
