Burned out on Tinder?
We can’t blame you – while it’s the go-to for most dating app users, it’s good to remember there are other choices out there. Seriously.
New dating app Crown, the latest offering from Match Group (who owns Tinder BTW), just launched in L.A. I was invited to the launch party, which was at EP&LP’s rooftop bar (which I’d been dying to check out). Anyway, drinks were flowing, music was playing, and beautiful young singles were everywhere. I mean literally – there was a line down the block just to get in.
Crown doesn’t pull any punches in its marketing – it is a straight-up game, designed to draw you in (and I assume play with your friends cheering you on in the background). Many dating apps have tried to avoid the game label, but Crown embraces it fully.
How it works:
Think of it like your March Madness pool – you are given 16 potential matches per day, and you have to play pairs against one another as you get down to the final four. Then you “crown” the winner. You have 24 hours to message each other (if your Crowned match chooses) before the cycle starts over again.
Interestingly, despite the fact that Crown is a game, the creators maintain that it was designed to build better connections. First, you’re comparing real people to each other, instead of swiping on individual profiles where you tend to compare real people to the non-existent ideal person in your head. (Real people will always be lacking, right?) Second, because you invested time in playing the game (and can only do it once a day), you are more likely to reach out.
It’s worth checking out, but like with most apps, it’s not how much you swipe. In the end, it’s all about making a connection IRL.
XO,
Kelly
