I’ve just reconnected after being Internet-free for 2 weeks (not intentionally, it just worked out that way thanks to the virtues of the Italian countryside). Let’s just say I was staying in a beautiful place with my Italian relatives, far from WiFi and where shepherds actually DO lead flocks of sheep, even if it’s only across a small highway. It was bliss, but now I’m back and trying to sort through 2 weeks of voicemails and emails, which isn’t fun. Facebook even sent me a message wondering what had happened and if I still liked them.
Anyway, since I’m easing back into normal life and work and took a break from responding to emails (it is 4th of July weekend after all), I was standing in line at the grocery store flipping through an OK! Magazine (don’t judge) when I overheard this conversation between a twenty-something man and woman:
Guy: “Hey, what’s up?”
Girl: “Hey Mike…missed you at Sharon’s party last night.”
Guy: “Yeah, I was busy. Tell her I said whatup.”
Girl: “Sure! You know, we should um…all get together soon.”
Guy: “Yeah, sure.”
Girl: “How about tomorrow night?”
Guy: (looking flustered) “uhhh….”
Girl: “Great, I’ll give you a call. We can meet somewhere close to you.”
Guy: “I don’t think I can do tomorrow, but I’ll catch up with you soon.”
Girl: “How about Sunday?”
Guy: “Uhh…I’ve gotta run.”
Girl: “Great, see you Sunday. I’ll call you tomorrow to figure out where and when.”
The guy takes off. I was kind of afraid she’d start running after him. I’m willing to bet he doesn’t answer his phone all weekend, and I’m also willing to bet she calls numerous times to “confirm” something that he isn’t interested in. I’m all for being bold, but I wish people would notice more when the object of their affection is obviously not interested. Just….stop trying.
Happy 4th of July…flirt well, have fun, and please know when to walk away.
