It’s a new year, and let’s face it. The resolution thing has lost its luster. In 2009, we went without a lot of things because of the economy, and now we’re tired of sacrifice. What’s interesting is that people are still hopeful about finding love. I keep reading articles that point this out—how despite the fact some of us can’t pay our rent, we can shell out $50 for a membership on Match.com. Online dating seems to be making a comeback during times of trouble.
I read a lot of great dating blogs. I am heartened by the fact that despite such crappy dating experiences, people still seem to be hopeful. Even with online dating. Sure, we bitch about profiles and old pictures posted, but at the end of the day, online dating memberships continue to grow, which means more choice in the dating pool.
That said, I have one request to all you online daters out there: please be HONEST in your profile. No more lying about age. No more cute taglines like “Life is a bitch…be its pimp” (true one). No more shirtless photos, or photos of you from 15 years ago. Don’t go online if you are married or in a relationship, please. I know this sounds obvious, but it happens. If you lie, your date will find out soon enough, which only makes things worse if you actually like him/her. And besides, more people are concerned about the amount of lying going on when it comes to online dating than about getting bad matches or having bad dates.
I know many of you are hesitant about online dating. You’ve been burned before, why will this time be different? Well, take a look at your single counterparts who keep trying again despite the disappointing results. At the end of the day, it just takes one good person to lead to a potential relationship. Surely a few are bound to be online.

I am actually totally with you here. I’ve recently converted to honest, putting the right height and uploading pictures that make me look like me on an average day. Much more likely to find someone who wants you for you – that’s what I’m finding.

Great post. I’m toying with the idea of enrolling on an internet dating site for the first time ever, so these are some great tips. I’m off to root through the rest of your blog now for any other top tips!
